Joint construction of this Fort began in 1847 by civilians and the Army Corps of Engineers. The fort was only 2\/3rds completed by the time the Civil War started. It was originally under confederate control however a short time later Robert E. Lee ordered everyone to evacuate due to Union forces.<\/p>\r\n

Unfortunately by the end of the Civil War, even though the union now controlled it, it was left unfinished. The Spanish-American war revived it for a short time to use for munitions and quarters. Only one year later after the Spanish-American war ended, the fort again was abandoned to time.<\/p>\r\n

It sat empty until 1926 when a private entity was interested. The Army Corps of Engineers sold the property. A few years later, in 1935, Fort Clinch became one of the Florida\u2019s first state parks!<\/p>\r\n
